Course Description
Welcome to our immersive Education Innovation workshop series. Join master educators to explore the most current, evidence-based best-practices to keep your knowledge and skills up to date and to strengthen your ability to support every student. Each session is led by an expert in the field with real world experience, who will guide you through the material and help you apply it immediately to your work.
This immersive, interactive workshop will outline the trait of high sensitivity and teach participants the core characteristics of the highly sensitive student. This seminar is designed to help counselors, educational therapists, teachers and caregivers to better understand the needs of students who benefit from accommodations and interventions related to environmental sensitivity. Attendees will gain insight into the assessment of sensory processing sensitivity and the latest research on how to support this learning profile, which occurs in 20-25% of every classroom. Participants will leave with several strategies to support sensitive students and their families so that they can thrive both at school and at home.
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of the course, you should be able to
- Discuss core research on environmental sensitivity as it relates to issues in education.
- Recognize key differences between a medical, deficit model and a strengths-based approach to learning, including academic anxiety.
- Apply the acronym "DOES" to your toolbox of assessment strategies for identifying highly sensitive students.
- Evaluate how your classroom, counseling practice and/or home can better support the profile of sensitive learners.
Topics Include
- Background information about the temperament of sensory processing sensitivity
- Research on sensitive students in the classroom: specific case studies
- Examples of environmental interventions and accommodations that support all learners
- Discussion of misdiagnosis and mismedication of highly sensitive and twice-exceptional individuals
- Support to create safety for neurodiversity and individuality in the school environment
