Earn a scholarship to study in Silicon Valley

UCSC Silicon Valley is committed to supporting global learners who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a passion for advancing their careers. Our International Student Merit Scholarship provides outstanding F-1 students with additional financial support to begin their studies.

This competitive scholarship is available to new international students enrolling in a UCSC Silicon Valley certificate program.

Scholarship overview

The International Student Merit Scholarship is designed to recognize top-performing applicants who have:

  • Strong academic achievement
  • Clear professional goals
  • Leadership or community involvement
  • Demonstrated motivation for success in their field

Scholarship recipients are awarded a one-time reduction of the International Student Fee applied to their first quarter of enrollment.

Eligibility requirements

To be considered for the International Student Merit Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Apply as a new F-1 international student to a UCSC Silicon Valley certificate program.
  • Students must be in initial status in the F-1 visa process to be considered for the scholarship.
  • Meet all admission requirements for the chosen program.
  • Submit complete application documents, including transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and financial documents.
  • Demonstrate academic excellence, professional experience, or leadership potential.
  • Be enrolling full-time (12 units per quarter) as required for F-1 visa students.

Note: This scholarship is not available to continuing students, part-time students, or students studying on other visa types.
 

How to apply

To apply for the International Student Merit Scholarship, students must:

  • Complete your program application.
    Submit your program application and all required documents for admission.
     
  • Submit the Scholarship Application Form.
    The scholarship application includes a short personal statement (300–500 words) addressing:
    • Your academic goals
    • Your career aspirations
    • How studying at UCSC Silicon Valley will support your future
       
  • Submit your application before the deadline.
    Applications without all required documents will not be reviewed.

Application deadlines

Scholarship applications are due one month before the application deadline.

  • Fall: June 15
  • Winter: October 15
  • Spring: January 15
  • Summer: April 1

Early submission is strongly encouraged, especially for F-1 visa students who require time for visa appointments and travel preparation.

Award amount

Scholarship recipients receive:

  • A one-time merit scholarship of $1,000 USD, applied automatically to their first quarter International Student Fee.
  • Recognition as an International Student Scholar within UCSC Silicon Valley.

Scholarship awards cannot be deferred to future quarters.

Maintaining scholarship eligibility

Students who receive the scholarship must:

  • Enroll in 12 units per quarter
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Remain in valid F-1 visa status
  • Attend all required orientations and check-ins

Failure to meet academic or visa compliance requirements may result in loss of the award.

Yes. You may reapply for a future quarter if you are not selected AND have not yet begun your program.

Scholarship awards are tied to the specific quarter for which they are granted. You are welcome to apply for the scholarship again for the quarter you intend to begin your studies

Merit, not financial need, determines award decisions.

Applicants are notified of their results by email within 3–4 weeks after the deadline.
