The six-digit identification code is used to identify institutions of higher education in the U.S. (It is named after the Federal Interagency Committee on Education and was initially used to identify schools doing business with the Office of Education in the early sixties.)

Today, you may need it to prove that they've completed coursework at an accredited institution. For example, people signing up to take the Certified Financial Planner® (CPA®) exam will need the number to show the CFP Board that they prepared at an approved school.
