Science Communication II: Building Trust and Making an Impact

Course Description

In the second of two introductory level science communication courses, students will have the opportunity to practice additional forms of science communication, while also learning to be trustworthy and impactful science communicators. We’ll discuss additional forms of science communication not covered in the previous course, dive into interviewing techniques, and explore modalities beyond print. We’ll also take a closer look at inclusion and representation, in addition to discussing the role of science communication in science advocacy and public engagement. The course will wrap up with tips for launching a freelance science communication career and an overview of emerging AI tools in the field. Upon course completion, students will have a broad understanding of the field of science communication and will be well equipped to advance their skills or launch a career in the field of science communication.

 Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course, you should be able to

• Produce diverse science communication across multiple formats and platforms.
• Practice ethical, inclusive, and accurate science communication.
• Engage diverse audiences and stakeholders in science communication.
• Build a professional science communication presence.

 Topics Include

• Evergreen SciCom: science explainers, Q&As with scientists, and profiles of science leaders
• Going beyond print: short-form video, documentary production, and podcasting
• Engaging underserved and underrepresented communities, decolonizing the narrative, and handling language and translation challenges
• How science and policy are intertwined, advocating for funding and education, and engaging policymakers
• Pitching and freelancing as a science communicator
