About

SUTANU GHOSH, PMP, PMI-ACP, MCTS, a project manager at VMware, has worked in the field for more than 20 years, serving as a project management officer, as well as a hands-on project manager on both software and hardware projects. In his current position, he is involved with mergers and acquisitions. As an embedded-systems engineer he has worked on the platform of switches, and as an engineering manager he has managed quality assurance, sustaining, release engineering and program management. In addition to VMware, he’s worked at many distinguished Silicon Valley institutions such as Bay Networks, Symbol Technologies, Lockheed Martin, and NetApp. His passion in project and program management is centered on scheduling. He has taught the subject at PMI-SV, PMI-SF Bay and San Francisco State University for more than a decade. Ghosh earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked for Tata Motors, which ignited his passion for Lean. He has a master’s degree from Arizona State University, Tempe, in CAD/CAM, and has published on CAX tools.

Students are expected to attend and participate in the course, either in-person or remotely, during the days and times that are specified on the course schedule. Just like a traditional in-person class meeting, you are expected to attend and participate in the discussion. Students attending remotely are also strongly encouraged to have their cameras on to get the most out of the remote learning experience.

Required Tools & Materials:

This is a tool-independent course.
This class is intended to address project management techniques, not teach a particular tool.

Please note that homework cannot be done using MS Word or MS PowerPoint. A tool that can perform mathematics and export data in tabular and database-friendly format is required.

However, usage of Microsoft Project 2010+ is highly recommended. In general, students use Microsoft project provided on their work laptops. Additionally, UCSC Silicon Valley Extension provides Microsoft Project via AWS Appstream for all participants free of charge (see welcome letter for details).

You do not need to buy any books for the class.

Each session has a PDF file "Main Materials" and a few "Supplemental Material" presentations. These should cover what will discuss in class, as well serve as a handbook for reference later. However, we will discuss "further reading" at the end of the session depending on the Learning Outcomes.

Recommended Tools & Materials:

At a minimum, a spreadsheet tool - e.g., MS Excel or Google Sheets.
