About

BETH POWELL, MA, a passionate educator with 35 years of experience in education and curriculum design, is known for her transformative approach to teaching math. She received a bachelor’s degree in Math at San Jose State University, where she tutored math in programs that helped first generation college students successfully complete STEM majors. While getting her masters in Transformative Leadership, she focused on math education and the assumptions underlying how we teach math. Her commitment to equity in education and her creative teaching approach have made her a respected figure in mathematics education, earning her a place as a featured educator in Limitless Mind: Learn, Lead, and Live Without Barriers, (HarperOne, 2019) by Jo Boaler. During her 10 years at My City School, a middle school for unique learners in San Francisco, she launched a data-driven, standards-based curriculum to help students with learning disabilities close a two- to three-year gap in content knowledge. She was also a key advisor in guiding the startup school to become a thriving educational community. She enjoys speaking nationally and internationally with classroom teachers and has taught graduate level courses in reading and assessments to teachers and educational therapists at UCSC Silicon Valley Extension.
