Extension Transforms a Career: IT Solution Designer Makes Leap to Early Childhood Education

- Haidee Lim

Term : July, 2014
Department : Education
Program : Early Childhood Education

Are you thinking about a major career shift? Haidee Lim accomplished one with the confidence that comes from having not just one, but two certificates from UCSC Extension.
After spending eighteen years in the IT industry, Lim left her position at Oracle to focus on managing Baby World Child Care Center in Los Altos. The new career was a major change from her days as an IT solution designer, and it required education and training. Extension’s comprehensive programs in Early Childhood Education and Supervision and Administration of Early Childhood Centers were the perfect fit.

“It was important for me to quickly learn about licensing requirements and administration,” Lim says. “I continued taking more ECE courses after that.” She was looking for ways to improve operations at the center, and the courses helped inspire her. “I find that there’s always room for more improvements after I complete an ECE course. ”

Lim got the administrative skills she needed to be successful—and she was impressed by the experience and insight of her instructors and classmates.

“The courses I took provided exactly what I needed,” she says. “One course helped me with the licensing requirements, documents, and forms.” Other courses equipped her with tools for teaching and training, curriculum development, maintaining quality of care, and evaluating teachers and classroom materials.
Lim completed course work for both certificates (Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Education: Supervision and Administration) simultaneously, while working full-time.
“I believe in the value of continuous education. It’s best to have a bunch of tools handy when you need them,” Lim says. “The great thing about the ECE program at UCSC Extension is the fast paced format, the quality of the instructors and materials. There are also good discussions and convenient sharing of information with classmates – many of whom are experienced teachers and directors of other centers. Their insights are valuable. ”
