- Mark Burriss
|Program||:||Environmental S&H MGT|
When Mark Burriss was working on his master’s in environmental studies at San Jose State University, he discovered a passion for industrial hygiene. He shared his interest in the field with his professor, who introduced him to UCSC Extension’s then-new Hazardous Materials Management Certificate program.
“I got involved in the inaugural class, where I made contacts that I have maintained during my more than 25 years in environmental health and safety,” he says.
Practical Skills for an Evolving Field
Burriss found these new skills useful when he went to work for a biotech company, where he was able to understand the new types of hazards and provide value right away.
“As an EHS leader, I had my staff get the certificate as well,” he says. “I knew their careers would benefit from the experience.”
Leader of a New Generation
Burriss has returned to UCSC Extension regularly to stay up-to-date on changing legislation and environmental regulations. He now has the chance to help develop and grow Extension’s burgeoning Hazardous Materials Management program.
“I want to make sure that the high level of training is maintained, while bringing a new perspective and materials that will help the next generation of EHS professionals,” he says. “The EHS professional needs to stay current, not only with ever-tighter regulations, but also with industry best practices and standards. The staff at UCSC Extension provides the best blend of professional experience and effective adult education in a fun environment.”
Burriss is the principal consultant of Environmental, Health, and Safety Services, a firm that provides online training, compliance auditing, management evaluation, analysis and strategy.
