EHS Professional Discovers Practical Resources at UCSC Extension

- Stephanie Ortiz

Term : December, 2015
Department : EHS
Program : Environmental S&H MGT

When Stephanie Ortiz accepted a position in environmental health and safety at her company, she was new to the field. Her manager approached her with a UCSC Extension catalog in hand and suggested that she enroll in the dual certificate in Environmental Health and Safety. Within a few courses, Ortiz was applying her newfound knowledge on the job.

“I had been working in many aspects of the company, including materials development, production and quality control,” she says. “UCSC Extension’s program helped me develop skills in safety and helped me understand what was needed as far as compliance. It opened my eyes and broadened my outlook on occupational safety.”

Access to Network of EHS Professionals

Ortiz appreciated the practical tools that she gained in classes like “Dimensions of Health and Safety Training” and “Applied Ergonomics: Human Factors of Safety and Health.” She also discovered that she could call on her classmates and instructors whenever a question came up at work.

“I really liked that you were in class with other safety professionals who shared their work experience,” she says. “I also liked how the homework they’d give was applicable to your job. I still use training plans and records that I created for class as a tool. I’m always reading from my binders; I still use the class materials as a resource.”

Keeping Up with a Changing World

Since completing the dual certificate in 2009, Ortiz has worked hard to keep the environmental health and safety training materials at her work up-to-date.
“There are constant changes going on in the industry,” she says. “I learned at Extension how to read regulations and break them down for better understanding. That was really great.”
