MAHMOUD PARSIAN, M.S., Ph.D., is a software architect with more than 30 years of experience as a developer, designer, architect, and author. He leads the Big Data team at Illumina developing scalable distributed algorithms for genomics data using Python, Java, MapReduce, PySpark, Spark, and open source tools. For the past 15 years, he has also been involved in Java server-side, databases, Snowflake, machine learning, and distributed computing. In addition to UCSC Silicon Valley, he teaches Big Data Modeling & Analytics and Machine Learning at Santa Clara University. Parsian earned his post-graduate degrees in Computer Science from Iowa State University. He has published five books: Data Algorithms with Spark (O’Reilly, 2022); PySpark Algorithms (Amazon, 2019); Data Algorithms (O’Reilly, 2015); JDBC Recipes (Apress, 2005); and JDBC Metadata Recipes (Apress, 2006).
