UCSC Professor to Discuss the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative
Join us for the monthly UCSC Alumni Association Silicon Valley gathering (which is open to UCSC Extension students and alumni) to learn more about the the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative and environmental data justice. Lindsey Dillon, Ph.D., assistant professor of Sociology at UC Santa Cruz, passionately promotes just and effective environmental policies. She co-founded the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative, or EDGI (pronounced "edgy") in November 2016 out of a concern that the then-newly elected presidential administration would reverse environmental policies and research that monitor environmental problems.
In her August Prof & a Pint talk, Dillon will discuss EDGI’s response to currents threats from federal environmental agencies and policy such as the collection and management of environmental and climate data. She will lay out ongoing concerns regarding the hollowing out of our environmental agencies, especially the EPA, and discuss further action steps to protect our environmental future and pursue environmental data justice.
Dillon is jointly affiliated with the UCSC Environmental Studies Department, the Community Studies Program, and the Science and Justice Research Center. She earned a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and a B.A. from Oberlin. In her research she focuses on urban environments and social justice. Her current book examines environmental justice activism and the political ecology of toxic cleanup and urban redevelopment in San Francisco's industrial neighborhood of Bayview-Hunters Point.
