Course Description:
This graduate level course is designed for alternative education teachers seeking an introduction to advanced skills and study in working with alternative education students. The course includes development of an applied pedagogy of alternative education teaching, examination of alternative education case studies, development of academic and behavioral assessments and interventions for alternative education learners, in the context of lesson planning and classroom management. Topics also include self-esteem, self-concept formation, and challenging behaviors in the context of teaching thematic literacy across an alternative education curriculum. In addition, the course addresses the topics of trans-generational poverty, educator burnout, and creativity in alternative education learning environments. A field experience component is also included.
