Globalized production is expanding from manufacturing to services. Contrary to conventional views of service activities, today's emerging global economy finds a significant number of service tasks that are increasingly tradable. A substantial amount of employment in these tradable service industries (information, financial services, and professional/business services) are considered the driving economic engines at the heart of high-technology regional economies such as Silicon Valley. Workers in these tradable service activities typically have higher skill levels and are paid higher wages than are manufacturing workers. What does the offshoring of services mean for the U.S. economy, for the region and for American workers? Are current adjustment programs adequate? Professor Lori Kletzer will discuss these issues and the findings of her current research on the consequences of increasing economic integration in the domestic labor market.
