The Code of Ethics and Standards for the Professional Practice of Educational Therapy (AET 1985, reissued 1999) states, "The main goal and purpose of educational therapy is to optimize learning and school adjustment, with recognition that emotional, behavioral, and learning problems are intertwined." This goal challenges therapists to develop coaching skills to complement their remediation work in academic subjects. Coaching is practiced in many disciplines, so we ask: How do successful therapists adapt coaching techniques to benefit their clients?
Participants leave this course with a set of skills to support client success in organization, time management, prioritizing, and self-monitoring. In addition, participants-through role play and case study analysis-come to define their own coaching styles and build competence to select appropriate techniques according to client needs. Topics also include when and how to integrate coaching into the remediation process, resources, and referrals to allied services.
