Academic tutors play a critical role in education as they work with learners to maintain skills, catch up with school peers, and meet state standards. Learner success, however, depends in large measure on the ability of the tutor in key areas:
- Assessing learning goals and outcomes
- Applying learning theories, strategies, and techniques
- Responding to learning styles
- Building learner social skills and self-esteem
- Fostering learner independence
- Addressing California content standards
- Methods and materials
- Organizing, planning, record keeping, and reporting
To this end, the instructor in this course models current learning theories and tutoring behaviors while leading participants through self-assessments of their current skills; guiding the development of a practice program; coaching to advance tutoring skills; and assisting to compile a tutor resource manual that matches tutoring goals (e.g., to tutor in mathematics).
