First let me say that our company (Metabolex) is extremely pleased with the program, the instructors and the flexibility of the U.C. Extension program leaders and administrators.
As a young, rapidly developing biotechnology "start-up" company, we knew that we needed to develop the leadership skills of our first-line and middle managers. The rapidly increasing demands on their management and leadership skills were outpacing the "on-the-job" time it would take for them to develop these skills. Because cost is always an important consideration, we feared that we would only be able to send a few managers a year to professional management development workshops. U.C. Extension offered us a more effective solution. Due to our desire to maximize the effectiveness of the training and their reasonable cost structure, we decided to offer the leadership training to all of our management personnel including our executive team. The intense time commitment, although a little difficult to manage at times, worked to our advantage in the end.
The results have been clear. The 360 degree assessment in which we all shared proved to be a powerful communication vehicle. Although it was intended to be kept private, our group decided to share their results openly. The outcome has been very positive and enhanced the cohesiveness of the team.
The material covered during the 20 hours of fundamental courses as well as the 20 hours of elective courses was thought provoking and professionally delivered. Leadership concepts are now more clearly understood and discussed. Our entire management team is now speaking the same language, better understanding the philosophy behind human development and most importantly "rowing the boat" (so to speak) in the same direction with a clear conviction of doing it right.
