What To Expect


  • Instructor involvement throughout your course via discussion boards and/or e-mail
  • Courses have fixed start and end dates but in most cases you can complete modules at your convenience within that time period
  • After you enroll, you’ll be sent your username and password via e-mail to log on and access your course
  • Assignments, exams, and projects are generally due on designated dates
  • Upon course completion, your work will be graded and added to your transcripts the same as every Extension course

While instructors are not available 24/7, UCSC Extension uses a variety of instructional techniques and technologies to ensure your online learning experience is successful.


What You'll Need


  • Access to the Internet
  • To get the most out of your online learning experience, you must know how to navigate the Internet
  • For some courses, it is helpful if you have access to a computer on which you can install additional software as recommended by the instructor
  • For courses on such topics as Java, Windows 2003 Server, Linux, and SQL Server 2005, free software is available over the Internet to practice commands and participate in course activities

Signing Up Is Easy


  • REGISTER ONLINE - Please select from our Online Courses.
  • GET FIRST DAY ACCESS - Register 10 business days or more before your course starts to guarantee FIRST DAY ACCESS. Login information will be sent to students on or before the first day of class. 
  • LATE ENROLLMENT NOTICE: Students who register less than 10 business days in advance of the class start date may not receive their login information in time for the first day of class. Allow up to 10 business days from the date you register to receive your login information.

Is Online Learning Right For You?


Online learning is convenient- you do not have to commute, and you can attend class at your convenience. However, it does require discipline and self-motivation.

Your instructor will demand at least the same quality of work as they would receive from you in a face-to-face classroom and it will take a similar number of hours to complete the course.

Remember that your course may include deadlines and instructions on assignments, but there will not be anyone telling you to “turn in your assignment.”

No matter when you decide to study, your instructor will hold you accountable for your assignments, projects and tests in order for you to complete your course and receive a grade.
