iPhone Courses for Three Levels
Beginning January 2012, our popular course “Developing Applications for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch” will be re-organized as three separate courses for students of different interests and skill levels. We are also opening a brand new Mac Lab to support these courses. The new Mac Lab features iMacs with quad-core i7 CPUs, the newest Lion OS and iOS Xcode SDK 5.0. The lab is located on our newly expanded third floor, with a commanding view of Silicon Valley.
The three new iPhone development courses include “Introduction to Developing Applications for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch” (Course #21938), which is for new developers. It covers the basics of the iOS SDK, culminating in a simple app design. “Practicum of Developing Applications for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch” (Course #30001) is a hands-on project course for those who have the necessary programming knowledge. Students will be guided through the development of a practical application. “Developing Advanced Applications for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch” (Course #23592) covers advanced topics such as multimedia, Web interfaces and databases. All three are electives in the Mobile Device Programming category of the Computer Programming certificate program.
UCSC Extension is a member of the Apple University program, which means our students can access Apple’s resources for iPhone development with no additional cost. The school provides a state-of-the-art development environment and highly experienced instructors to help students learn efficiently. For success in these courses, students should have prior experience with C programming (Objective –C preferred) and general software development knowledge. Many of our students have produced creative applications by the end of their first course. With these new course options, UCSC Extension can now help you rapidly develop even more complex apps.
New Web Design Certificate Option for Experienced Designers
With the continued evolution of Internet technologies and design practices, professional Web designers need to continually acquire and implement new tools and techniques. With more than 20 regularly-updated courses, our Web Design certificate program is the most comprehensive in the Bay Area. To date, the certificate has included a sequence of courses that start with the basic skills and can make you a competent designer in key aspects of Web Design. However, our students, most of whom are working professionals, have asked for a certificate track tailored to advanced students.
So beginning in the fall quarter, we've made our requirements more flexible, so that both entry-level and experienced designers can get exactly the skills they need to start a career or stay competitive. The certificate program will have two tracks of study. For those new to the Web Design field, we recommend that you take the prerequisites and all the foundation courses. Experienced Web designers can take a mix of foundation and advanced courses based on their individual knowledge and career goals. Either approach leads to a UC certificate.
If you've already started a certificate program with us, your previous credits will still be honored. And the new flexibility also applies to existing candidates. We encourage all students to review the new course structure on the Web Design program course page, and join us for the Program Overview event on January 9, 2012 for a presentation on this change. New and returning students are welcome to attend. For questions, please contact program@ucsc-extension.edu.
