Education and Credentialing


Teaching Young ChildrenUCSC Extension in Silicon Valley offers programs for educators who wish to energize their teaching with new ideas and skills. We offer a number of courses that will help you clear your credential but check with Kim Jackson at kljacks@ucsc.edu to confirm what courses you'll need in advance.  The Education Department also offers a number of professional development certificate programs for educators.

Our programs include Credential Courses,      Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) IntensiveEducational Therapy, Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Education: Supervision and Administration, and Instructional Design and Delivery.

Credential Courses
We offer CCTC-approved courses to clear Ryan credentials and meet selected teacher preparation requirements for SB 2042 credentials. View Courses

ECE: Early Childhood Education
Examine the teacher-child relationship and learn to identify developmentally appropriate characteristics and activities to create a quality learning environment. View Courses

ECE: Supervision and Administration
This certificate is designed for individuals working toward completion of Title 22 academic requirements to become directors of private child care centers. It also satisfies Title V academic requirements to become teachers and supervisors for Children's Center Permits. The course is also for students and parents interested in furthering their knowledge of early childhood education and administration. View Courses

Educational Therapy
Gain skills essential to working as an educational therapist while discovering how to evaluate differences in the learning process and how to treat learning disabilities. View Courses

Instructional Design and Delivery
Develop your capacity to organize and deliver learning in ways that utilize current information about learner needs, learning styles, organizational goals, and methods to achieve and evaluate outcomes. View Courses

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Develop fundamental instructional expertise in bilingual education through new methods, in tandem with traditional methods of teaching, to gain knowledge of language structure and use. View Courses


Graduates of Extension's TESL Certificate Program Now Qualify for Masters Degree Credit


The Education Department at UCSC Extension in Silicon Valley has an articulation agreement with the University of San Francisco whereby all credits earned in Extension's TESL Certificate Program will transfer directly into the USF MA TESL degree. This is very exciting news for current and former TESL Certificate students who are interested in obtaining a Master’s degree.

The next group of students to go through this program will start in January 2011 and complete their Master's by the end of November 2011. If you are interested in enrolling for next year please check back on our website often for updates or attend one of our information sessions that take place quarterly at UCSC Extension in Silicon Valley.


Instructor's Spotlight


Rebecca Lee LovinRebecca Lee Lovin, Ed.D. in international and multicultural education, delivers teacher training in English as a Second Language. Her focus has been on cross cultural differences in the classroom, including nonverbal behaviors and teacher/student perception. Dr. Lovin has been a high school teacher in San Jose for 15 years, teaching SDAIE social studies courses. She also worked for the Metropolitan Adult Education Program for 8 years, teaching ESL to adults. In addition to teaching, she was a Fulbright Scholar in South Korea and has trained teachers in Egypt and at national conferences such as NABE and TESOL. Dr. Lovin has taught at UCSC Extension since 1995, playing a vital role in the TESL/TEFL Certificate Programs.
