FACULTY

At UCSC Extension, courses are developed by program chairs and faculty according to the rigorous University of California standards and designed to meet the economic needs of each industry. Our instructors represent the best of both worlds.

Program Chair

FRANK M. MANGINI, M.S.E.E., M.B.A., PMP®, PMI-ACP, CSP, has over 25 years’ experience in project management and product development and served as the director of programs for ARGOSystems/Boeing Electronic Defense Systems. He has taught for UCSC Extension since 2002. Mr. Mangini has project management experience with a wide variety of electronic defense systems’ design and development projects for both domestic and international customers. As senior programs manager and director of programs, he led multi-year programs which developed and produced shipboard and submarine electronic detection and protection systems for domestic and international naval forces. He has also been involved in commercial consulting and startup enterprises including the development and production of Web-enabled sports training systems. 

Mr. Mangini is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) member of the Project Management Institute (PMI®), a PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) and a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) member of the Scrum Alliance. Mr. Mangini is a lifetime member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He has also been a member of Toastmasters International since 2006 and has achieved the competence levels of Advanced Communicator Bronze and Advanced Leader Bronze.

He has taught project management courses for the UCSC Extension since 2002. He teaches classroom, online and on-site corporate training courses for both the Project and Program Management on and the Advanced Applied Project Management certificate programs. His special interests are project risk management, critical chain project management and Agile-Lean development projects.

Curriculum

Program Format

UCSC Extension’s Project and Program Management program is offered at UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Campus, a beautiful facility located on the corner of Scott and Bowers in Santa Clara. Our entire curriculum is also available online. Choose courses according to your interest or declare candidacy in the certificate for a more comprehensive overview of the field.

Certificate Requirements

Total: 7 courses

Required: 4 courses, 10.5 units

Elective: 3 courses

GPA: 3.0, with a C or better in all courses.

Timeline: To earn the certificate, you must complete all minimum requirements within 3 years of declaring candidacy.

Transferring courses from other institutions: Courses completed more than 5 years prior to the date of certificate issuance cannot be used to fulfill requirements. Learn more about transferring credit here.

Recommended Course Sequence

“Role of the Project Manager” is the prerequisite for all required courses. If you are pursuing a certificate, you must complete the three required courses before enrolling in the capstone course, “Applied Project Management.”

Declaring Candidacy

If you intend to pursue a certificate, declaring candidacy establishes program requirements early in your studies, so any subsequent curriculum changes do not affect your progress. It does not limit what courses you can take; and it helps you structure your professional development program for maximum benefit to you.
