About

UCSC Extension’s Professional Award in Social Media Marketing is designed to prepare marketing professionals with the skills necessary to launch an effective social media campaign that aligns with business goals, cultivate a growing audience, and keep pace with industry demands. In just three courses, you’ll have acquired a skillset that will enable you to market products and services using the latest tools and technologies. Your third and final course, focuses on application and management of social media campaigns.

Upon completing this Professional Award, you will be able to develop your own social media campaigns, and have an overall understanding of social media and its potential.

Curriculum

Program Format

UCSC Extension’s Project and Program Management program is offered at UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Campus, a beautiful facility located on the corner of Scott and Bowers in Santa Clara. “Principles of Marketing” is a prerequisite for the  Social Media Marketing Award. While courses can be taken based on individual interest and level of experience, you must meet the prerequisites of individual courses. Prerequisite courses cannot be counted toward the award. 

Certificate Requirements

Total: 3 courses

Required: 3 courses, 6 units

GPA: 3.0, with a C or better in all courses.

Timeline: To earn the award, you must complete all minimum requirements within 3 years of declaring candidacy.

Transferring courses from other institutions: Courses completed more than 5 years prior to the date of certificate issuance cannot be used to fulfill requirements. Learn more about course substitution by contacting Student Services

Social Media Marketing Fundamentals


The contemporary marketing toolset has expanded dramatically with the mainstreaming of online technologies and social media. This course surveys the technologies and tools driving the shift from traditional push marketing to the push-pull model of customer-engagement marketing.
