The Business Leader of Today

The great leaders have always been the learners, the people who are always on the lookout for the best solution to the new business challenges of the day. Fortunately there is an ever-growing body of evidence to support business decisions—new analytics, new technology, and new research about coaching and inspiring a workforce. Our Business and Leadership program invites you to dip into this evolving  body of knowledge, to understand effective management skills, and be the leader who can build real change. One thing hasn't changed, however. The business leader of today is required to understand a broad set of skills—from sales and marketing to economics, finance, management, and organizational behavior.

Students in the 25-unit Business and Leadership certificate program will get a foundation of practical skills to handle the day-to-day aspects of running a business. They will receive the opportunity to network with industry professionals and get hands-on practice with industry professionals who teach them to effectively facilitate, negotiate, coach like an expert, and help employees carry out a unified vision. There is such a dearth of great leaders who understand the new workplace of today. When you understand the broad theories of business and develop competency in critical business functions, you will be able to more effectively compete in the Silicon Valley job market. Our program is structured to give you the skills you need to make the right decisions and get promoted to the next management position.

In addition to the certificate program, we offer a range of courses to target knowledge in specific subjects—Business Essentials, Financial Analysis / Accounting, Management Development, and Marketing Business Development. Students, who are not interested in pursuing a certificate program, are invited to pick and choose courses one at a time or sign up for the Individual courses that fulfill professional continuing education requirements such as MCLE and CPA.

Because the need for great business leadership skills applies to organizations across the board, salaries and job forecast are dependent on a chosen industry. That said, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that, overall, the median annual wage for management occupations was $100,790 in May 2016. It was the highest wage of all the major occupational groups. Further, the BLS estimated that the median annual wage for chief executives was $181,210, and $44,290–$155,020 for general and operations managers, or a median of $99,310.

As a graduate of the Business Administration certificate program, you’ll have the skills to:

Program Format

The UCSC Extension Business and Leadership certificate program is offered at the UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley campus, a beautiful facility located on the corner of Scott Boulevard and Bowers Avenue in Santa Clara. Courses are offered on campus and online. Choose courses according to your interest or declare candidacy in the certificate for a more comprehensive overview of the field.

Certificate Requirements

Total units needed for certificate completion: 25 units
Required: 14 units
Elective: 11 units
GPA: 3.0, with a C or better in all courses.
Timeline: To earn the certificate, you must complete all minimum requirements within three years of declaring candidacy.
Transferring courses from other institutions: Courses completed more than 5 years prior to the date of certificate issuance cannot be used to fulfill requirements. Learn more about transferring credit here.

JEFF COX, M.S., B.A., is a veteran human resources professional with over 30 years of experience in the field. His areas of expertise include executive and management development; program development including operations, administration and HROD; maximizing employee performance; and hi-tech (software, hardware and infotechnology) in both for-profit and non-profit domestic and international companies. In addition, he regularly provides pro-bono advice to non-profit organizations.  Mr. Cox has twenty years of experience in academic program development, has taught more than 100 graduate and undergraduate courses in 30 subjects--including MBA courses at Notre Dame de Namur and Santa Clara universities—and has authored courses in HR, International HR and international business. Mr. Cox earned his MS from San Francisco State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University.
