Term : April, 2014
Department : Business and Management
Program : Human Resource MGMT

Akshata Metha has a secret weapon when it comes to job interviews: her UCSC Extension study materials. Since completing her certificate in Human Resource Management and an internship at the Wikimedia Foundation, Metha has prepared for interviews by reviewing notes from her courses.

“UCSC Extension’s course material is really strong,” Metha says. “Before I go to interviews, I review notes from my ‘Benefits Management’, ‘Compensation Management’, ‘Law and Human Resource Management’, ‘Talent Acquisition’ and ‘Staffing’ courses.”

Metha found UCSC Extension’s HR program after relocating to California from India, where she had worked as a human resource generalist. As an international student, she wanted to update her professional skill set and gain internship experience in the field.

“I completed an M.B.A. in India, but when I came to California, I found that the culture and work practices are different,” she says. “I wanted to update my skills.”

Metha was impressed with the depth and breadth of her courses and the real-world experience shared by her instructors.

“In my ‘Talent Acquisition 101’ course, the instructor is teaching us how practically you can work, what systems are used right now, and what the new trends in recruitment are,” she says. “I was able to learn a great deal about team work in my ‘Organizational Development’ course.”

In addition to her courses, Metha appreciated the efforts of Extension’s International department. The program staff helped orient her in the program and provided guidelines for applying for optional practical training (OPT). Since completing her certificate, Metha has applied for OPT and is on the lookout for job opportunities in HR.

“UCSC Extension is a wonderful place to get a practical education, especially if you’re looking for a change,” Metha says. “The professors share real-world experience, which is the most wonderful thing to have.”
