Unlocking Latinx Leadership

 

What is "Slugs & Scones"?

As we continue fostering connections within our alumni community, we're thrilled to announce the next installment of Slugs and Scones, Morning Meet-Ups. This quarterly event series aims to bring together our Silicon Valley alumni, offering opportunities to expand your local network while providing avenues for continued learning and support.

May's Theme: Latinx Alumni of Silicon Valley 

This edition of our quarterly gathering aims to spotlight the rich contributions and diverse experiences of our Latinx alumni in Silicon Valley. From groundbreaking innovations to influential leadership roles, our Latinx Slugs have been instrumental in shaping the landscape of Silicon Valley and beyond.

Join us for a morning filled with networking, inspiration, and community building as we hear from UCSC alumnus Ron Gonzales (Kresge, ‘73), current President and CEO of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley and former Mayor of San José.

  • 8:00 - 9:10 AM: Registration, coffee, light breakfast 

  • 9:10 - 10:00 AM: Welcome and Introduction, Keynote Presenter     (6 - 8 minutes), Q&A, In-Person Mingling 

Lisanna Dominguez

​Ron Gonzales (Kresge, ‘73), President and CEO of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, has over 50 years of experience in technology and public policy. Before his current role, he founded Presencia, LLC, providing marketing and sales consulting services. Ron served as Mayor of San José from 1999 to 2006, leading initiatives for

strong neighborhoods, improved education, and affordable housing solutions. He championed the extension of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) to San José, earning the nickname "Mayor BART." Previously, Ron worked at Hewlett-Packard and served on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and the Sunnyvale City Council. He has received numerous honors, including Silicon Valley's Top 100 Influencers and the Character Award from the Boy Scout Council of Santa Clara County. Currently, he serves on the boards of the Silicon Valley Capital Club and KIPP Northern California Public Charter Schools.

Diane

Guadalupe Sanchez (Crown, ‘13), a first-gen UC Santa Cruz grad, has devoted her career to education. With experience in college recruitment from UT San Antonio to UC Scout, she now directs recruitment and retention at St. Lawrence Elementary and Middle School, prioritizing holistic student growth. Beyond her role, she advocates for education with the University of California Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (UC CLAA) and sharpens her leadership skills through Toastmasters. In her downtime, she treasures moments with her fiancé, finding balance in both her professional and personal pursuits.
